Behind the Scenes Commentary

With me having the flu in real life, I did manage to set up this interview with Glen before I left to visit my family for Thanksgiving. It’s a shorter than average episode, but we got some quality stories and history about the town of Lexington.

To enhance the storytelling elements, I included various sound effects, like branches breaking as Glen talks about such sounds. I also experimented by adding textures to the background music.

This episode is the second to the last of the season, so there’s a reveal that will play into the season finale. Jeff and I have already recorded the last scene and we’re working on the interview, which will be a collaboration with other podcasters.

Downtown in December with the OKC Streetcar

In celebration of the Oklahoma City Streetcar’s one year anniversary and Downtown in December, people can enjoy complimentary fares on the streetcars on the weekends beginning November 22 through January 5, 2020. I partnered with EMBARK as my sister-in-law, Lessa Keller-Kenton, guest hosted this episode using the streetcar to travel to several Downtown in December activities. Stops include the Midtown Holiday Pop-Up Shops, the Devon Ice Rink, the Myriad Gardens, Bricktown, the Water Taxi, and the Lights on Broadway in Automobile Alley.

I’m thrilled I got to do an update to my Downtown in December story that I did back in 2016. In my original story, I did a montage about the various festivities and what people looked forward to the most during the season. This year’s video, I did a showcase using the streetcar to get around.

You can learn more about the OKC Streetcar route and other events EMBARK is doing this holiday season at okcstreetcar.com. Huge thanks to them for sponsoring this episode. Also over at Uncovering Oklahoma, I wrote this article highlighting several events happening during December that you can partake in and use the free streetcar rides to get there.

2×12 Enid’s Ghost Stories

Unbeknownst to Sam, Geoff has been researching other hauntings in Enid. The professor meets with Sam at the studio where he shares the stories he learned about a spirit that’s still trying to fix an elevator, an explosion sound that haunts a school, a boy trying to keep people away from a lake, and more.

2×11 Touring The Ghosts of OU

With Sam recovering from the flu, Geoff took the University of Oklahoma Ghost Tour and recalled the ghost stories to Sam. The tour included tales about Holmberg Hall, where a music professor is said to play in the night, footsteps on the glass-plated floors of the library decks, a little boy roller-skating through the third floor of Ellison Hall, and Mex the Dog still cheering for the football team.

Behind the Scenes Commentary (Spoilers)

Doing an episode about OU’s ghost stories has been a back-up plan for us. Since Jeff himself would be the person Sam and Geoff would interview, we’ve put the episode off. With some interviews falling through and with me getting hit with the flu last week, I decided to do this episode to keep our weekly schedule. I came up with the story plot device of having the professor go on the OU ghost tour and recall the stories to Sam, who missed the tour because he was sick. I also came up with an idea where we could “call Jeff” for additional questions, but we ended up not doing that.

One of the things I’ve noticed in this episode when reflecting back on our first season was how much more back and forth Sam and Geoff have with each other. This episode isn’t all Geoff talking but has Sam asking questions and making comments. I really like that element.

This episode only covers a few of the stories Jeff himself shares on the tour as well as a bonus story about Mex the Dog. Fun Fact: I did an episode about Jeff’s OU ghost tours on Uncovering Oklahoma years ago. The photo used to represent the episode was a still frame captured from that tour.

Parlor OKC

In this in-depth Uncovering Oklahoma episode, Jabee and Dana Gillett interview the people behind Parlor OKC and its restaurant concepts in Automobile Alley. They visit with Burger Pig, El Guate, Graffiti, Mother Clucker, Pachinko Parlor, Providence Pizza, and Sura Eats, as well as Parlor’s lead bartender, Katie Prouty.

I took what learned from filming my episode on The Collective and sought to make this one better. Trying to interview everyone in one day wasn’t going to work, so I broke this into two days. For variety, pacing, and scheduling, Dana interviewed everyone on the bottom floor while Jabee took care of the second. Dana and I spent four hours while Jabee and I spent two. Technically, I spent more than two days filming as there’s also b-roll from my various visits, like the media preview event. I could’ve used more b-roll, which I didn’t realize what I was missing until editing it this week and I wanted to get it out today. Originally, I wanted to release it last week, but I had the flu and I didn’t get much of anything done.

Overall, I’m happy with how well this episode turned out! I think it’s an improvement over my last food hall themed episode, but we’ll see how it performs.

I hope you enjoy this 25-minute long episode of Uncovering Oklahoma.
