Making Money as a Visual Artist

The Show Starts Now Studios in collaboration with the Norman Arts Council, Resonator, and OkSessions presents Art & Victory, a free monthly panel discussion series designed for creative entrepreneurs. The theme for July’s panel was Making Money as a Visual Artist, which included topics on becoming successful, how to get your art displayed in galleries/businesses, working art festivals, pricing your work, pitfalls to avoid, and hustle tips.

Christian Pearson from OkSessions hosted this panel discussion with artists, Jessica Legako and Jason Wilson.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS:

Jessica Legako – Jessica Legako is a painter who primarily works in oils; her work often involves texture and gestural movement. Her current work involves a focus on distance and depth involved with landscapes. She has earned her BFA in Studio Art from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma. Born and raised to a farmer and a teacher, she was enriched with an outdoor lifestyle. This allowed undisrupted observation, which fed her imagery. She currently lives and maintains her studio in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Jason Wilson – Forty years ago, a young boy watched his Native American grandmother design, assemble and sew his family’s quilts. Today, contemporary Perceptual artist, Jason Wilson, influenced by his grandmother’s quilts, gives new life to old concepts. Jason says his designs are about building the painting as much as painting the painting, involving hours of construction. To this end, Wilson developed his own unique acrylic paint formula to hand paint his canvas. The result is a technically perfect, remarkably flawless finished canvas. By bringing his designs to life, Jason Wilson hopes to delight and inspire others.

It was our biggest crowd yet! What was really fun was we some people sketching the panelists and making art during the show. I do have plans for the next three Art & Victory sessions. August is Intro to Acting, September we’re talking about making short films, and in October we’ll discuss starting your own podcast.

Writing Stories

In collaboration with the Norman Arts Council, The Depot, and OkSessions, Art & Victory is a free monthly panel discussion series I produce that’s designed for creative entrepreneurs. The theme for the June panel was Writing Stories, which included topics such as writing characters different than yourself, overcoming writer’s block, world-building, and more.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS

Marisa Mohi is a writer, blogger, and YouTuber. She loves reading, watching, and telling stories. You should know that she’s working on a novel and her planner is at least twice as big as yours. You can check out her blog at MarisaMohi.com, or watch her videos at YouTube.com/MarisaMohi.

Chad Reynolds is the co-founder of Penny Candy Books. A graduate of Emerson College’s Writing, Literature, and Publishing Program with a Master’s in Creative Writing, Chad is the author of five chapbooks of poetry. He is the co-founder of Short Order Poems, a performance art group that brings poetry to people in surprising ways, but mostly via old typewriters. Prior to Penny Candy Books, Chad worked as a commercial insurance broker with a focus on renewable energy projects and as an English teacher. He lives in Oklahoma City with his wife, two sons, and a dog.

Norman H. Hammon is a Norman-based writer and a consultant to nonprofits. He spends his days writing grant proposals for Jazz in June, the Norman PHIL and NAMRON Players Theatre and his remaining time writing columns for the Norman Transcript, and others, as well as a sequel to his science fiction work, OUTWORLD by N. Harold Donley (his pseudonym). He is also the author of Fund Raising … for the rest of us and speaks throughout the state on all matters nonprofit. A graduate of the University of Oklahoma a couple of times over (BSW & MSW) he lives in the Core of Norman with his wife Sheryl and cat Gracie. He currently teaches Grant Writing for the Arts at the University of Oklahoma Weitzenhoffer Family College of Fine Arts and serves as a grant reviewer for the Oklahoma Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts.

Promoting Yourself Online

The Show Starts Now Studios in collaboration with the Norman Arts Council, MAINSITE Contemporary Art, and OkSessions presents Art & Victory, a free monthly panel discussion series designed for creative entrepreneurs. The topic for May’s panel was Promoting Yourself Online As A Creative Entrepreneur. The conversation focused on promoting yourself as a brand on social media, finding your voice, learning from mistakes, and creative marketing ideas. This broad discussion was for artists, writers, podcasters, filmmakers, musicians, and all creative entrepreneurs hustling themselves.

This panel took place at MAINSITE in Downtown Norman. Hosted by Christian Pearson from OkSessions, Christian is passionate about growing Oklahoma’s music scene.

ABOUT THE PANELISTS

Tracey Zeeck is a veteran publicist, communications consultant, published author and public speaker. In her role at Bumbershoot PR she does everything from bookkeeping to housekeeping, from writing to pitching to developing high-level strategy for clients. She is regularly working with many moving parts – and with many moving partners – and always keeps everything moving ever forward. Her “everyone matters most” mentality means that she maintains strong working relationships with clients, colleagues and members of the media. In her 25 years in the industry, she’s learned what makes a client newsworthy and she can help make her clients’ stories shine in the ever-evolving modern news cycle. Zeeck works alongside her clients, dreams big, stays on budget, produces great results, and even manages to have some fun along the way.

Jacobi Ryan was born and raised in Lawton, now residing in OKC, has been writing Hip Hop music since 2006 at the age of 16. He’s seen the top spots of the top 40 on his hometown’s radio station, performed over 300 live shows, and is now releasing a new song, podcast, and video every week – all 2019. Among many passions, Hip Hop takes center stage and serves as the nucleus for Jacobi Ryan. His mother a teacher and father a business owner, Jacobi naturally has an entrepreneurial spirit with an interest in all forms of art, business, and empowerment.

Jacobi’s sound influence has been connected to the likes of Jay-Z, Big KRIT, and J. Cole. He lists his personal influences as Bob Marley, Nipsey Hussle, Jay-Z, Warren Buffett and many other artists, innovators, moguls and revolutionaries.

Hannah Royce is a creative entrepreneur who started her own business at the ripe age of 23. HRCO helped local businesses manage their social media accounts, create content, devise authentic engagement strategies and more. Her passion for people, OKC, and inclusivity led her to creating the women’s empowerment event, Confidence Con, one year after starting her business. ConCon brings together intersectional groups of women and non-binary humans to explore the confidence gap and how we can bridge it with intentional vulnerability, mindfulness, and self-advocacy. She was recently hired by Downtown Oklahoma City Partnership as their Social Media Coordinator where she manages all sub-district accounts within the business improvement district. She also serves as the Secretary and Communications & Programming Coordinator for the newly-formed Oklahoma City Pride Alliance.

I’m excited to premiere Art & Victory, a monthly discussion panel series for creative entrepreneurs. The show is a production of The Show Starts Now Studios and is done in collaboration with OkSessions, Resonator, Norman Music Festival, and the Norman Arts Council.

In theme of the Norman Music Festival, the topic for April’s panel was Recording Your First Album. The conversation touched upon various aspects, including finding the why behind your music, mistakes made, and planning tips.

This panel took place at Resonator in Downtown Norman. Hosted by Christian Pearson from OkSessions, Christian is passionate about growing Oklahoma’s music scene.

About The Panelists:

Desiree Yearby was born and raised in Oklahoma City. Desiree started attending local hip-hop shows when she was 16 and chased the feeling she felt there for the last 12 years. When she was 22, she started to attend major music festivals which is where she built a lot of industry relationships. The last 12 years Desiree has thrown showcases, started the blog/site Gotsteeze.net, booked festivals in OKC and Tulsa, became an adjunct professor at the University of Central Oklahoma teaching Social Media Marketing to the School of Contemporary Music.

Sophia Massad is an alternative/indie-rock artist, reigning from Oklahoma City. Her sultry to sassy vocal tones sculpt her unique sound. With her rugged charm, exuberant sense of humor, and absurd performance style, Sophia Massad pours herself into every song. Her musical style, inspired by the Alabama Shakes, Amy Winehouse, and Fleetwood Mac, can be both lawless and poetically honest. Massad’s biting lyrics reveal raw and transparent frustration.

Severin Olsen is the lead singer and guitarist for the band Brooding. Severin has written and recorded music for over 5 years now in a home studio including multiple singles, EPs and albums throughout various bands.

I’m currently preparing for next month’s panel, which will discuss promoting yourself online as a solo creative entrepreneur. Be sure to visit the Art & Victory website. I’ve gotten lots of positive feedback about this project and so I hope it continues to grow. I know this idea is far out there, but I think it would be cool to see other cities open up their own Art & Victory chapters, much like 1 Million Cups, Startup Grind, and Creative Mornings.
