Downtown in December with the OKC Streetcar

In celebration of the Oklahoma City Streetcar’s one year anniversary and Downtown in December, people can enjoy complimentary fares on the streetcars on the weekends beginning November 22 through January 5, 2020. I partnered with EMBARK as my sister-in-law, Lessa Keller-Kenton, guest hosted this episode using the streetcar to travel to several Downtown in December activities. Stops include the Midtown Holiday Pop-Up Shops, the Devon Ice Rink, the Myriad Gardens, Bricktown, the Water Taxi, and the Lights on Broadway in Automobile Alley.

I’m thrilled I got to do an update to my Downtown in December story that I did back in 2016. In my original story, I did a montage about the various festivities and what people looked forward to the most during the season. This year’s video, I did a showcase using the streetcar to get around.

You can learn more about the OKC Streetcar route and other events EMBARK is doing this holiday season at okcstreetcar.com. Huge thanks to them for sponsoring this episode. Also over at Uncovering Oklahoma, I wrote this article highlighting several events happening during December that you can partake in and use the free streetcar rides to get there.

Parlor OKC

In this in-depth Uncovering Oklahoma episode, Jabee and Dana Gillett interview the people behind Parlor OKC and its restaurant concepts in Automobile Alley. They visit with Burger Pig, El Guate, Graffiti, Mother Clucker, Pachinko Parlor, Providence Pizza, and Sura Eats, as well as Parlor’s lead bartender, Katie Prouty.

I took what learned from filming my episode on The Collective and sought to make this one better. Trying to interview everyone in one day wasn’t going to work, so I broke this into two days. For variety, pacing, and scheduling, Dana interviewed everyone on the bottom floor while Jabee took care of the second. Dana and I spent four hours while Jabee and I spent two. Technically, I spent more than two days filming as there’s also b-roll from my various visits, like the media preview event. I could’ve used more b-roll, which I didn’t realize what I was missing until editing it this week and I wanted to get it out today. Originally, I wanted to release it last week, but I had the flu and I didn’t get much of anything done.

Overall, I’m happy with how well this episode turned out! I think it’s an improvement over my last food hall themed episode, but we’ll see how it performs.

I hope you enjoy this 25-minute long episode of Uncovering Oklahoma.

Ghost Stories along the OKC Streetcar

Author and host of the Oklahoma City Ghost Tours, Jeff Provine lead Caitlin Ford from EMBARK on a ghost tour along the streetcar route. Stops include Automobile Alley, Downtown, Bricktown, and Midtown.

If you haven’t already listened to the Tales Unveiled episode, we recorded that the same day as this video. Once we finished the video at Scissortail Park, we started the podcast right there.

Behind the Scenes Commentary (Spoilers)

I partnered with EMBARK for both Uncovering Oklahoma and Tales Unveiled to talk about ghost stories along the streetcar route. On the same day we recorded this podcast, we also shot an episode for Uncovering Oklahoma, which will be out very soon once the second revision is approved.

Recording on a live streetcar had its production challenges, but we adapted. For example, we worked with the streetcar announcements into our storytelling. Granted, you won’t be able to get on the streetcar and listen to this episode in-sync because of logistics, but I think it would be fun to listen to while taking a ride.

We did record this episode on Monday and since it’s a sponsored episode, I moved our show schedule so it could be released on Friday. In our recorded quey, we have stories from Chandler, Tulsa, and Enid. The Chandler has been edited and I’m editing the others.

In this episode, we joke about staying overnight at City Hall with Mayor David Holt. Should we do that for real? I’m worried about nothing happening and the story turns out boring. I don’t know. We’ll see. Probably not going to happen.

Who is this mystery riding the professor was watching? Let’s just say, we have a big reveal for our season finale.

I’m looking forward to working with EMBARK on future projects. We’ve discussed Uncovering Oklahoma episodes about art museums along the streetcar, Downtown in December, and using all of their services in a downtown adventure.

Thank you for listening to Tales Unveiled!
