Yes! Science! Show Announcements​​

I have two announcements today in regards to Yes! Science!

First, I want to invite you to join us at Walker Terrace at 1300 North Walker Avenue in Oklahoma City on Saturday, March 16th for the season premiere of the live-studio audience talk show of Yes! Science! Doors will open at 10 am for coffee and networking, with the show starting at 11 am. Tickets are available now for $10 with no additional fees.

Our featured guest will be Arianne C. Hunter. Born and raised in Oklahoma City, Arianne obtained her B.A. in Chemistry and Biological Anthropology from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH where she was a member of the Division I Women’s Basketball Team. After graduation in 2014, she joined the Chemistry/Biochemistry Ph.D. program at The University of Oklahoma where she is a fully funded “Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Department of Defense Scholar” and “Nancy L. Mergler Dissertation Completion Fellow”. Her research is focused on the development of synthetic methods to rapidly and efficiently construct pharmaceutical drug molecules in hopes of making them more affordable for the general population. During her graduate studies, she has won multiple awards and scholarships, with the most notable being the Oklahoma NextGen Under 30 Award for her community impact in the State of Oklahoma. She is passionate about communicating science to the general public and gives scientific talks to teenagers in middle school and high school and also 50+ aged adults who continue to have a passion for learning. Arianne truly believes to solve the diverse set of scientific problems plaguing our society, we must have a diverse set of minds contributing solutions.

The other news is that my documentary short, “Yes! Women in Science!” has been accepted to its first film festival, Twister Alley in Woodward! It’s been submitted to about a dozen festivals, so we’ll see where it all goes.

Looking ahead on the science show, I’m currently working on finding guests and venues for April and May’s episodes. I do have a date and venue set for May, but I’m waiting to hear back in regards to April.

Banquet Cinema Pub in Oklahoma City is both a restaurant pub and a movie theater, making for a unique social experience. Hear from Hunter Wheat and Jeff Patton about how this place is unique to the state, including why they’re great for a date night.

This is a follow-up video that I did on them a few weeks ago as a personal vlog. We talk more about the food in this video as I interview their executive chef as well.

Chili at The Red Cup

In preparation for National Chili Day next week, I visited three restaurants in the Oklahoma City metro that serve bowls of chili as part of their regular menu. For this story, I traveled to Flint in Downtown Oklahoma City for their Bison Chili, The Red Cup in OKC for their vegetarian chili, and The Diner in Downtown Norman for their Championship Chili. The chili featured from each place is completely different from each other. Not only do all of these venues offer bowls of chili, but they also feature it on other menu items such as burgers.

National Chili Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in February, which will be on February 28th for 2019.

I’m planning on doing more themed videos in the future for Uncovering Oklahoma. It gives me a chance to feature older, more established places and to revisit places I haven’t been to in a while. After all, just because a place has been around, doesn’t mean that it’s not new to someone else. As for future themes, National Corn Dog Day is coming up next month…

Chalk

Bringing luxury and comfort, Chalk in Oklahoma City’s Chisholm Creek elevates the typical sports bar experience by welcoming all sports with scratch made food. Chalk also features a state of the art video system with 100 screens, totaling 1,600 square feet of screen surface. You can’t throw a ball inside there without hitting a TV.

I was first invited to Chalk for a media preview event last month. Also invited were several of my media friends, so we got a booth together and hung out. I’m not a sports person, but Chalk is a fun place to hang out and the food is really good. My favorite was their lasagna rolls, which should give you an indication of how different they are. Chalk is more appetizer focused so guests can order a la carte.

I’ve already filmed next week’s featured video for Uncovering Oklahoma, which will highlight three different restaurants for their chili. I’m planning to do more themed videos this year, which will give me a chance to showcase more established places.

Season 3 of Yes! Science!

Significant changes are happening for the third season of Yes! Science! The format of the series is shifting from documentary to a live-studio audience talk show that will be hosted by Pallas the Librarian. (Pallas is a regular on Quarter Minutes.) The series will still focus on interviewing women in STEM fields, but will also include fun experiments and book recommendations.

Episodes will be produced monthly, with the new season kicking off on March 16th. The first episode will be at Walker Terrace in Oklahoma City’s Midtown District. Doors will open at 10 am for coffee and networking, with the show starting at 11 am and ending around noon. We’re doing it this way with the idea is that you’ll be able to see a show, have lunch afterward, and have your evening free for other events. Save the date as tickets will be available soon!

To accompany the new format, Yes! Science! has a new logo designed by Christie Owen. Thank you, Christie, for the fantastic logo!
