Tales Unveiled in the News for October 2019

I want to take a moment to highlight the publications that featured my Tales Unveiled podcast last month. I’ve already shared them on social media, but I wanted to include them in a blog post for prosperity. On the About page for Tales Unveiled, I have all press coverage listed there too.

Spooky Stories collection on Stitcher

The first feature came from Stitcher, a major podcast service. Tales Unveiled was included in their Spooky Stories collection.

Jeff and I were invited to the Oklahoma Today Podcast to talk about ghost stories and the show. As they described, “Oklahoma Today editors Nate and Greg are joined by fellow podcasters Jeff Provine and Dennis Spielman of Tales Unveiled, which explores Oklahoma’s most haunted places, to talk about their favorite local ghost stories and learn more about Provine’s ghost tours.”

The last feature was in the Oklahoma Gazette, Halloween Guide: Invisible guests. This was the first time I was featured in the Gazette where I’m quoted and it’s my first full-page article too. My wife framed the article and it’s hanging up in our house. (For the record, Yes! Science! had a nice section featured about the Myriad Gardens event, but neither Pallas nor I were quoted as it was just about the event.) Now, I just need to work on getting on the front cover.

How has this translated for downloads? The second season started on September 13th. In the month of September, the show had a total of around 500 downloads. In October that number was 10,153! Episode downloads are now averaging between 1,000 to 2,000 whereas last season it was 100 to 500.

Even though Halloween is over, Jeff and I are still cranking out more episodes. Our Tulsa episode comes out Friday and next week will be Enid. We’re working on recording more with plans to end the season with a total of 14 episodes on Friday, December 13, 2019.

Thank you, everyone, for listening and sharing Tales Unveiled! I would love it if you would leave a rating and review of the show on your favorite podcast provider. Your reviews do help other people discover the show and get noticed by the providers for possible collection features.

The Return to Chandler

Bryan Herring. It was the name that kept popping up when Sam and Geoff where in Chandler for their Route 66 day trip. Before the two could reach out to him, Bryan invited them back to Chandler to meet with the Lincoln County Paranormal Investigators for more stories about the town as well as other frightful tales in Oklahoma.

Behind the Scenes Commentary (Spoilers)

As the description explains, Jeff and I were recommended to reach out with Bryan for more ghost stories. I don’t have much for behind the scenes stories other than while we were recording the main interview, every so often, we could hear sounds of someone punching in an alarm code.

Embark on a Ghost Streetcar Tour

Geoff and Sam travel on the Oklahoma City Streetcar with Caitlin Ford from EMBARK where the professor shares ghost stories he’s collected along the route.

I’m excited that this episode of Tales Unveiled is brought to you by EMBARK – providing streetcar, ferry transit, bike share, and bus services in Oklahoma City and Norman. Their transportation options connect people with their community, while easing traffic congestion and improving air quality. Learn more at embarkok.com and then explore the city using public transportation.

Behind the Scenes Commentary (Spoilers)

I partnered with EMBARK for both Uncovering Oklahoma and Tales Unveiled to talk about ghost stories along the streetcar route. On the same day we recorded this podcast, we also shot an episode for Uncovering Oklahoma, which will be out very soon once the second revision is approved.

Recording on a live streetcar had its production challenges, but we adapted. For example, we worked with the streetcar announcements into our storytelling. Granted, you won’t be able to get on the streetcar and listen to this episode in-sync because of logistics, but I think it would be fun to listen to while taking a ride.

We did record this episode on Monday and since it’s a sponsored episode, I moved our show schedule so it could be released on Friday. In our recorded quey, we have stories from Chandler, Tulsa, and Enid. The Chandler has been edited and I’m editing the others.

In this episode, we joke about staying overnight at City Hall with Mayor David Holt. Should we do that for real? I’m worried about nothing happening and the story turns out boring. I don’t know. We’ll see. Probably not going to happen.

Who is this mystery riding the professor was watching? Let’s just say, we have a big reveal for our season finale.

I’m looking forward to working with EMBARK on future projects. We’ve discussed Uncovering Oklahoma episodes about art museums along the streetcar, Downtown in December, and using all of their services in a downtown adventure.

Thank you for listening to Tales Unveiled!

The Ritz of Shawnee

As part of the professor’s continued effort to check in with all of his contacts, Sam and Geoff travel to Shawnee where they meet with Dee and Loren from IOKP, Investigating Oklahoma’s Paranormal. Dee and Loren share tales of Shawnee’s ghosts, including the Ritz Theatre, the radio station, and the lively downtown.

Behind the Scenes Commentary (Spoilers)

When I was invited to visit Shawnee for Uncovering Oklahoma from the city’s tourism group, I knew I wanted to come back for Tales Unveiled. They told me about The Ritz, which lead me to learn about IOKP. As I said in the podcast, Downtown Shawnee is worth walking around, especially Main Street.

We did try to go meet the person who had the photo of the ghost cat, but their shop was closed that day. Since the episode was a little short, I got with Kristy to record the reveal of the eye clue we had planned out. Kristy and I improvised the scene three times and I edited together two of the good takes to make that scene happen.

Our last episode, Dark Concerns in El Reno, broke over 1,000 downloads in the first week! I want to say thank you for listening to Tales Unveiled!

Dark Concerns in El Reno

Sam and Geoff travel to El Reno – not for their onion burgers, but to meet with paranormal investigator and author Tanya Mccoy-Womack. At Iron Tree Coffee, Tanya talks about El Reno’s history, ghost stories, and local cryptids.

Behind the Scenes Commentary (Spoilers)

Jeff had worked with Tanya on the Haunted Oklahoma City and Haunted Guthrie books and knew she would be great to have on the show. It was perfect timing for Tanya as her Haunted El Reno had been recently released. We talked about several of the stories in the book.

Although it wasn’t worked into the podcast, after Tanya took us to the old jail, we went and saw the hotel she talked about in the podcast. We didn’t go in or anything. We just wanted to see what it looked like real fast before we left town. I had been filming all day that day at the Oklahoma State Fair for Uncovering Oklahoma and Jeff had been working as well.

After our interview with Tanya, Jeff and I came up with the story plot of the Professor being concerned about his contacts in wake of Wendall’s murder, which we used for this episode and our Shawnee one.

I’ll have to back to El Reno at some point for Uncovering Oklahoma.
