Walking Around Guthrie

“After being invited to join another podcast group at the Stone Lion Inn in Guthrie, Sam and Geoff arrive early to Oklahoma’s most haunted town to gather more stories while there. Local residents give personal experiences of downtown and Stacey Frazier of the Guthrie Ghost Walk shares a treasure trove of stories about a town where the truth is even more shocking than the legends.”

Jeff and I recorded both this episode and the Stone Lion Inn one on the same day, which was a huge time saver. We walked around, trying to get a few people to be interviewed about the area, but we were meet with people not wanting to be recording or didn’t have any stories. It was a Sunday afternoon when we went to Guthrie and a few places were closed. The fabric store, which we had both visited last year for Uncovering Oklahoma, had closed up shop to our surprise. We did manage to get a couple of stories and a great interview from Stacey Frazier.

I’ve been enjoying this mini-arc leading up to the Stone Lion Inn. The voice mail from Brain in this episode was a happy accident. Though miscommunication/misunderstanding, Brain spoke as if we were coming today when I wanted a line to be used before in the last episode on Bricktown. Another happy accident was the timing of the train in the background right when we were talking about the train station. We did comment about it during the interview, but I cut it out for pacing.

Hope you enjoy this episode!

An Open Door in Bricktown

“Sam and Geoff meet up with Charles Stout, a walking encyclopedia for all things Bricktown Brewery. Stout shares the history of Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district as well as give a tour of a few unexplained things in the restaurant. The professor also reveals to Sam some research he’s been doing on a person of interest.”

A behind the scenes note, if I remember correctly, it was me who asked if we could see the basement. As I described it in the episode, it was neat. There’s a photo of it above.

On Sunday, September 23, we recorded the next two episodes of Tales Unveiled, which focus on Guthrie, Oklahoma. When we were there, I also recorded that voicemail from Brian used in this episode to help lead into the next storyline. We recorded the Guthrie stuff first before the end conversation between Geoff and Sam. I was able to add a foreboding line too, which I think was funny knowing what happens in the future.

The Outside of Stone Lion Inn - photo by Dennis Spielman

Two Spooky Encounters at the Stone Lion Inn

I have two spooky encounters/stories to tell about recording Tales Unveiled and a crossover/collaboration with the Okie Show Show at Stone Lion Inn last night.

While Brian Gililland from the Okie Show Show was setting up his recording equipment, Jeff Provine and I stepped outside to record our introduction to the place. Also outside at the time was Brain’s wife making a phone call. We went back inside. I had both my hands full, one on the mic and the other holding my recorder to capture the sound of the old wooden door opening. Jeff closed the door behind us and we went to check on Brian. About 15 seconds later, Laney tries to get inside, but the deadbolt was locked.

The second story happened toward the end of the night. Spoilers for Okie Show Show ahead as this next bit was recorded. We were doing a bit for Okie Show Show where all of the lights were turned off and Brian was asking for a ghost to talk to us. The owner of the place was in the hallway while the rest of us were gathered around a table when said she saw shadows moving upstairs. There were jokes about no one wanting to check it out when I very definitely ranted about there not being any ghosts (I was still in character of Sam Saxton). I stood up and went to look for myself and saw…Nothing. I took a seat and went on and on about there being no such things as ghosts. They gave up and turned the lights back on. I was still ranting as the lights were turned back on and one of the lights above us popped.

Those are my stories from last night on Sunday. I’ll share more about the recording process when I release the episodes. Our crossover episodes will be out next month!

A Paramount Discovery in Film Row

Inspired by a mysterious EVP message, Sam and Geoff visit The Paramount Building in Oklahoma City’s Film Row. As they learn the history and paranormal tales of the district, Sam starts to scratch the surface of Geoff’s past.

This episode featured four guests, our most yet, for Tales Unveiled. It’s also the longest so far at 37:52. We recorded interviews on Monday and Tuesday, Wednesday I edited, Thursday I did four other projects, and Friday I finished this episode.

The next episode focus on Bricktown, which we recorded yesterday at Bricktown Brewery with Charles Stout. I’m working on getting one more interview for that episode. Be sure to subscribe to new episodes via Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, YouTube, or right here.

Stirring Up the Ghosts at Kendall’s Restaurant

After Sam and Geoff toured the Tower Theatre, they stopped inside Scottie’s Deli where they ran into Greg Elwell of I Ate Oklahoma. Inspired by Greg’s ghost stories of restaurants with an immoral past, Sam and Geoff set off to meet with Kimberly Lock, the owner of Kendall’s Restaurant in Noble, Oklahoma where they try to stir up some activity.

This episode has one of my favorite narrations from Sam where he talks about Geoff being happy. I was doing a final edit yesterday (Thursday) when I felt like I should describe Geoff’s manner. When I recorded it, I improvised it and it was the fourth (and final) take that used. Jeff commented that he really liked this as well. Overall, as Jeff put it, “Great episode. Very charming with humor and stories.”

I’m in the process of scheduling interviews for episode five, A Paramount Discovery in Film Row, which is slated for release on Friday, September 14.

Featuring Greg Elwell and Kimberly Lock as themselves. Be sure to visit both Scottie’s Deli and Kendall’s Resturant for some great food and I Ate Oklahoma for where to go next. This episode is dedicated to Tobi Coleman, who died heroically putting on the most rocking of rock concerts with leading females on a planet that forbids such things.
