Lee Fithian

Pallas the Librarian interviewed architect, Lee Fithian, on this episode of Yes! Science! Lee and Pallas also make soap powered boats and discuss the book, “The New Mathematics of Architecture” by Jane Burry and Mark Burry.

Lee Fithian is an Architect and Associate Professor at The University of Oklahoma. Lee’s research and teaching efforts focus on the application of biological and ecological models to architectural design. She is finishing her dissertation in Engineering which has led to a patented building facade system that removes air pollutants from urban streets. Lee builds connections through interdisciplinary research to enable buildings to conserve and regenerate air, water, and energy in urban and suburban environments. Each of the courses she teaches carries a strong focus on the technical development and integration of analytical visualizations in order to develop not only sustainable but beautiful buildings.

Lee has over 17 years of commercial and governmental architecture practice experience, including serving as former Director of Sustainable Design at the Benham Companies (now Leidos). Within the State of Oklahoma, she helped found the Oklahoma Sustainability Network and the State Chapter of the US Green Building Council. Lee currently serves on the Committee on the Environment for the American Institute of Architects.

Alyssa Grooms is an intellectual property attorney at Dunlap Codding. She focuses her practice on patent drafting and prosecution, licensing, prior art searches, and patentability analysis; as well as licensing and other IP-related transactions.

Alyssa Grooms was born and raised in the southwest Chicago suburbs. Alyssa attended college at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois, where she studied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. During undergrad, Alyssa gained valuable work experience through Chemical Engineering intern positions at Citgo Petroleum Corporation and Flint Hills Resources. Upon graduating and finding herself wanting to be closer to her parents (who had since moved out of Illinois) and farther from harsh winters, Alyssa made her way to Oklahoma City as a law student at Oklahoma City University School of Law. She graduated in the top 10% of her class and was involved in various school organizations, including serving as a Student Instructor and a member of Law Review.

Alyssa Grooms enjoys staying active in the Oklahoma City community through volunteering and participating in athletic leagues. Growing up in a family of college athletes, athletics have always been a huge part of Alyssa’s life. She also serves on the Board of Directors for IgniteOKC and is part of the United Way of Central Oklahoma Board Serve program, which connects business professionals with United Way partner agencies. Alyssa was also recently honored with a NextGen Under 30 award recognizing individuals who demonstrate talent, drive, and service to their communities.

In her spare time, you can find Alyssa working on her golf game with her husband, Keegan, or hiking with their two dogs, Claude and Carl.

Exporting New Orleans style cuisine to Oklahoma City, Bourbon Street Café (formally Jazmo’z) specializes in seafood, steaks, pasta, and cocktails. With an atmosphere great for both intimate dates and casual drinks along the Bricktown canal, Bourbon Street Café is a fun place to be for any occasion.

Jazmo’z was part of my very first episode of Uncovering Oklahoma, which was about the Downtown and Bricktown districts. If you want to watch my original video from ten years ago, I’ve included it above. The segment starts at around the 8-minute mark.

In other news, Welcome to the Plaza Walls will premiere at the Tower Theatre on Monday, April 15th! Tickets are now available for $10 and proceeds will benefit the Plaza Walls project. The documentary will be available to buy/rent/stream with Prime on Amazon on Friday, April 19th.

I’m working on getting Monday’s Art & Victory show online, so stay tuned for that. Today, my documentary, “Yes! Women in Science!” is making its film festival premiere at The WIFI Film Festival in Topeka, Kansas. My wife and I are driving out to the festival tomorrow night as they will be showing the movie again on Saturday and I’ve been invited to the awards ceremony.

In the season three premiere of Yes! Science! in the new live-studio audience talk show format, Pallas the Librarian interviews Arianne Hunter about her career path as a scientist. Pallas and Arianne also make fluffy foam slime and discuss the books that inspired Arianne, “Don’t Be Such a Scientist: Talking Substance in an Age of Style” by Randy Olson and “Year of Yes” by Shonda Rhimes.

Born and raised in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Arianne obtained her B.A. in Chemistry and Biological Anthropology from Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH where she was a member of the Division I Women’s Basketball Team. After graduation in 2014, she joined the Chemistry/Biochemistry Ph.D. program at The University of Oklahoma where she is a fully funded “Science, Mathematics, And Research for Transformation (SMART) Department of Defense Scholar” and “Nancy L. Mergler Dissertation Completion Fellow.” Her research is focused on the development of synthetic methods to rapidly and efficiently construct pharmaceutical drug molecules in hopes of making them more affordable for the general population. During her graduate studies, she has won multiple awards and scholarships, with the most notable being the Oklahoma NextGen Under 30 Award for her community impact in the State of Oklahoma. She is passionate about communicating science to the general public and gives scientific talks to teenagers in middle school and high school and also 50+ aged adults who continue to have a passion for learning. Arianne truly believes to solve the diverse set of scientific problems plaguing our society, we must have a diverse set of minds contributing solutions.

I have two announcements today in regards to Yes! Science!

First, I want to invite you to join us at Walker Terrace at 1300 North Walker Avenue in Oklahoma City on Saturday, March 16th for the season premiere of the live-studio audience talk show of Yes! Science! Doors will open at 10 am for coffee and networking, with the show starting at 11 am. Tickets are available now for $10 with no additional fees.

The other news is that my documentary short, “Yes! Women in Science!” has been accepted to its first film festival, Twister Alley in Woodward! It’s been submitted to about a dozen festivals, so we’ll see where it all goes.

Looking ahead on the science show, I’m currently working on finding guests and venues for April and May’s episodes. I do have a date and venue set for May, but I’m waiting to hear back in regards to April.
